CLASSES ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, UPON APPROVAL.  COMMUTERS WELCOME, LIMITED HOUSING AVAILABLE.

A three day master class intensive with Lorraine Elizabeth Graves includes an intermediate class from 10:00 – 11:30 am and an advanced level class from  11:45 am – 1:45 pm.  Intermediate class includes all RCYBE Jr. Company and Company Apprentice members and is $125.00.   Advanced level includes all RCYBE Company members, 30 minutes of Pointe work daily, and is $150.00.   A $50 non-refundable deposit is required at registration and will apply to your tuition.

 

 

LORRAINE ELIZABETH GRAVES was born in Norfolk, Va., and began her classical training at the Academy of the Norfolk Ballet under the direction of the late Gene Hammett. She was later awarded full scholarships to the School of American Ballet and the American Ballet Center. She attended Indiana University at Bloomington, where she completed a four-year program in three years, earning a bachelor’s degree in ballet with distinction.  Graves began her career with the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) and rose to the rank of principal dancer within one year. Three years later, she became ballet mistress, in addition to her duties as a dancer.

Her performance credits with DTH include Giselle, Firebird, Footprints Dressed in Red, The River, Toccata E Due Canzoni, Etosha, Serenade, The Four Temperaments, Agon, Allegro Brillante, and the role of the siren in George Balanchine’s The Prodigal Son. She also had leading roles in Frederic Franklin’s production of Pas de Dix, Prince Igor, and Scheherazade, and Arthur Mitchell’s Rhythmetron, Holberg Suite and Fete Noire.

Television credits include the role of Myrta in NBC’s airing of Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Creole Giselle; the Princess of Unreal Beauty in the PBS production of John Taras’ The Firebird; and the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Graves’ guest appearances include performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic’s Young People’s Concert Series, The Norfolk Civic Ballet, The River City Ballet, The Northwest Florida Ballet, and the Virginia Ballet Theatre during the 1996 International Azalea Festival and Dance Theatre of Harlem’s 30th Anniversary Celebration at New York’s City Center.

Graves has taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts, The Governor’s School for the Arts in Virginia, The Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg, The Cornish Institute in Seattle, the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, the South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts, DTH’s Kennedy Residency Program (now the Pre-Professional Program), the Virginia Ballet Theatre, the Flint Institute of Music, and the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association.  She is a permanent guest faculty member at the Virginia School of the Arts, is on the master teacher faculty at DTH, and is a faculty member at the Governor’s School of the Arts in Norfolk. She is an invited guest teacher for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and also is lead adjudicator for the West Virginia Dance Festival.  The chairwoman of the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities also is a member of the Mayor’s Downtown Task Force; Links, Inc.; and the Todd Rosenlieb Dance Company Board, and is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Entertainment, Who’s Who Among Women, and Marquis’ Who’s Who.

WV Dance Festival

Various classes for ages 11 and up will be held in various locations around the Culture Center area on Friday – Sunday. Dancers will get a schedule as soon as we get it. Once we have information regarding the performance we will get that out as well.

Auditions, Registrations, and Summer Intensives!

Auditions for AP 1, AP 2, AP 3, Junior Company and Company levels for the 2016-2017 dance season have been scheduled for Saturday, April  9, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. at the studio.  There is a make up date scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 12:45 p.m.

Returning student registration will be held the week of April 11-16 at your regular scheduled class time. We will once again be offering a $10.00 per referral discount to your first months tuition next year. Referrals must be signed up in order to receive this discount. We really appreciate your support!

New student registration will be held Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

A collaboration of local youth arts organizations, the River City Youth Ballet Ensemble (RCYBE), the West Virginia Youth Symphony (WVYS), the Appalachian Children’s Chorus (ACC), and the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, combine to form YOUNG @ ART, and present A Winter World of Imagination.  A new mid-winter performance showcasing young talent in the arts from in the region.  This unique presentation is a beautiful live ballet performance of children, from age 7 to 20 years old, performing in three disciplines –ballet dancing, instrumental orchestral music and vocal performance.  A whimsical winter fairy tale theme weaves the performance together and garners excitement, and perhaps inspiration, among school children, young families and the public.

Over 150 RCYBE, WVYS and ACC young artists will perform with each other on stage and in the orchestra pit, delighting young people and adult audience members, alike!

One daytime performances are available for schools, homeschool groups and daycares on Friday, February 26, at 9:30am, tickets are $4 each.  To make reservations for this show please call The Clay Center group sales representative, Dylan Turner.  An evening performance is open to the general public. Join us for our second annual fundraiser, The Piano Barre Gala on Saturday, March 12, 2016, 6:00 pm at The Charleston Women’s Club, located at 1600 Virginia Street.

The evening will feature live music by Charleston native, Bob Thompson, a Jamaican themed catered dinner, a silent auction, and a cash bar.  Tickets for the evening are $75 each and must be purchased in advance.  To purchase tickets, by cash, check, or charge card, please call 304-925-3262.

The River City Youth Ballet Ensemble is The Official Youth Ballet of WV and takes pride in providing WV dancers for WV audiences.  RCYBE is a 501c registered non-profit organization and a portion of your ticket purchase may be tax deductible. All proceeds raised will go to support River City Youth Ballet Ensemble with miscellaneous performance costs, bringing in guest master teachers from around the world, and providing scholarships to dancers.
